KWTF is an internet and FM community radio station in the Bodega Bay/Santa Rosa area of California, broadcasting at 88.1 FM, and on the web at www.kwtf.net, that holds a special place in my heart. KWTF has come a long way since it's inception in the Fall of 2007.
I was working as the Media Resource Coordinator at the New College of California in the the school's Digital Theater Media Lab, where I was contacted by Common Frequency, a non-profit that supports the launch of grassroots radio stations. At the time, a window for new applications for LPFM radio stations had recently been opened by the FCC, and there was a frequency band opening in the North San Francisco Bay Area. New College was going through it's own struggles with WASC accreditation, and was unable to complete the FCC application. We reached out to the Peace and Justice Center of Sonoma County, who was thankfully able to provide sponsorship for the radio station application.
Now, 7 years later, KWTF has grown from an internet-only radio station to a fully-fledged, full power FM radio station, complete with a Board of Directors, Station Manager, and awesome programming.
I'm proud to have been able to contribute to the creation of this brand new radio station, and to see it grow wings and fly.
